When I see or hear the words “Farm to Fork” I think of my first real experience with it.
A very friendly gentleman by the name of Patrick Mulvaney (http://mulvaneysbl.com) lured me into a tent at the California State fair with the promise of free food. He was giving cooking demonstrations in the agricultural area; specifically he was blending freshly picked organic tomatoes, herbs, citrus and pepper into gazpacho (a cold soup).
Patrick explained that he moved to Sacramento from the east coast to be at the center of the food supply. This enabled him to establish relationships directly with the farmers who supplied his ingredients and it allowed his restaurant to operate with a same day approach that is simply not possible elsewhere; whatever ingredients arrived in the morning are served the same day.
Sometimes you know when you are uncovering something new and memorable as it is unfolding.
About a year ago my family purchased a 500+ acre coffee farm in Colombia. Our practice has been to employ local workers as well as refugees from Venezuela. (our farm: 5.607810, -75.828120)
I was born and raised here in Sacramento and I am a proud Californian to my core. Through the years I have become an avid supporter, believer, and advocate of the Farm to Fork movement in my home town.
We believe we can leverage the growing market for craft coffee to address the current unfair model of coffee production in Colombia (more on this later).
Vision: A beautiful new roastery in Sacramento where we supply the freshest, highest quality, handpicked / sorted, small batch coffee directly from our farm.
Every time we sell coffee we improve the lives of the farming community in Colombia and provide safe passage to refugees from Venezuela.
We have standard production lines up and running selling to the local co-operative. The current price paid is $2 USD per kilogram (2.2lbs); in other words: $0.91 per pound.
